$1500 increase on REEFER rates by January 1st 2013A number of major shipping lines including Maersk, MSC, CMA-CGM, APL, MOL … have announced that they will increase their reefer rates by $1500 in all trade lanes from January 1st 2013. The reason for this increase is to enable them to maintain their level of service and meet your supply chain needs. The reefer fleet is getting older and most of the equipment needs replacing while the shipping lines’ operational costs are increasing. Temperature controlled containers cost about four times more to build than dry boxes. The shipping lines consider that the current rates are not sufficient and this new investment needs to be recovered through a $1500 increase. We feel it is important to draw your attention to this matter as you may already be planning your 2013 orders. You can rely on TRANSO to help you to find the best options. |
Negotiations between USMX and ILAThe implication of the Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service in the negotiations on a new Master Contract between the United States Maritime Alliance (USMX) and the International Longshoremen’s Association (ILA) led to an extension of the deadline through to Dec 29. The next meeting is scheduled for Dec 10 & 11 in Newark, NJ. If an agreement is not reached by Dec 29, strikes could possibly impact all ports from Maine to Texas.

HURRICANE SANDYThe major container terminals at the Port of New York & New Jersey are open as reported by the Port Authority of NY/NJ : This exceptional situation is recognized as a “force majeure” which has led carriers to discharge some containers in other safer ports like Norfolk or Baltimore. They did so last week anticipating hurricane Sandy to protect cargoes. Some carriers are still skipping New York/Newark because of the current congestion. Because it is “force majeure”, the carriers are not responsible for the extra-charges that may occur in case of diversion of cargo to alternate ports.
